Thumbelina
Long ago, there lived a kind and lonely woman who wished more than anything for a child. She dreamed of having a daughter to love and care for every day.
One morning, the woman visited a wise old fairy who listened carefully to her wish. The fairy smiled kindly and handed her a magical flower seed.
“Plant this seed in a flowerpot and care for it well,” said the fairy. “Something wonderful will happen.”
The woman thanked the fairy and hurried home with excitement in her heart. She carefully planted the seed and watered it every day.
Soon, a beautiful flower began to grow. Its petals were bright and colorful, and it looked unlike any flower she had ever seen.
One sunny morning, the flower slowly opened its petals. Sitting inside was a tiny girl no bigger than a thumb.
The woman gasped with delight and gently lifted the little girl into her hands. Because she was so small, the woman named her Thumbelina.
Thumbelina was beautiful and cheerful. She had golden hair, sparkling eyes, and the sweetest smile anyone had ever seen.
The woman loved Thumbelina with all her heart. She made her a tiny bed from a walnut shell and soft flower petals.
Thumbelina slept peacefully each night beneath a blanket made from rose petals. During the day, she sang songs and danced among the flowers.
The birds loved listening to Thumbelina sing. Butterflies fluttered around her whenever she played in the garden.
One night, while Thumbelina was sleeping, an ugly toad hopped through the open window. The toad thought Thumbelina would make a perfect bride for her son.
Without making a sound, the toad picked up Thumbelina’s walnut-shell bed. Then she carried the sleeping girl away to a nearby river.
When Thumbelina woke up, she found herself sitting on a large lily pad floating on the water. She looked around and realized she was far from home.
The toad smiled and introduced her son. Thumbelina did not want to marry him, and she began to cry.
The fish swimming beneath the lily pad felt sorry for the tiny girl. They quickly gathered together and chewed through the stem holding the lily pad in place.
Soon the lily pad floated away down the river. Thumbelina waved happily as she drifted far away from the toads.
The river carried Thumbelina through beautiful forests and sunny meadows. Although she missed her home, she was amazed by the wonders she saw.
After many days, summer slowly turned into autumn. The weather became colder, and finding food became more difficult.
Thumbelina searched for a warm place to stay. Her tiny body shivered whenever the cold wind blew across the fields.
One evening, she discovered a small field mouse living in a cozy underground home. The kind mouse welcomed Thumbelina inside.
“You may stay with me during the winter,” said the mouse kindly. “In return, you can help me keep the house tidy.”
Thumbelina gladly agreed and worked hard every day. She swept the floors, organized supplies, and told wonderful stories.
The mouse soon became very fond of Thumbelina. She often invited her neighbor, a wealthy mole, to visit.
The mole was rich and owned many underground tunnels. He thought Thumbelina was charming and wanted to marry her.
The field mouse thought it was a wonderful idea. She encouraged Thumbelina to be grateful for such a good opportunity.
But Thumbelina felt sad whenever she thought about marrying the mole. He disliked sunshine, flowers, birds, and everything she loved.
One day, while exploring a tunnel, Thumbelina discovered an injured swallow lying on the ground. The poor bird had been hurt and could not fly.
Thumbelina felt sorry for the swallow and cared for him throughout the winter. She brought him food and kept him warm beneath soft leaves.
As the days passed, the swallow slowly grew stronger. He was grateful for Thumbelina’s kindness and never forgot her help.
When spring finally arrived, the swallow recovered completely. He spread his wings and prepared to fly away.
Before leaving, the swallow offered Thumbelina a choice. “Come with me,” he said kindly. “I can take you somewhere beautiful.”
Thumbelina looked at the mole’s dark tunnels and then at the bright blue sky above. She knew exactly where she wanted to be.
The tiny girl climbed onto the swallow’s back. Together they soared high above forests, rivers, mountains, and fields.
Thumbelina had never seen the world from so high before. The warm sunshine and fresh air filled her heart with joy.
After a long journey, they arrived in a magical land filled with colorful flowers. Every flower contained tiny people with wings.
The flower people welcomed Thumbelina warmly. They were delighted to meet someone as kind and gentle as she was.
Among them was a handsome flower prince. He immediately admired Thumbelina’s kindness, courage, and beautiful heart.
The prince spent many days getting to know her. The more they talked, the more they liked each other.
Soon the prince asked Thumbelina if she would stay in the flower kingdom forever. Thumbelina smiled happily and agreed.
The flower people celebrated with music, dancing, and laughter. Butterflies filled the air while birds sang joyful songs.
The prince gave Thumbelina a beautiful pair of wings. Now she could fly among the flowers just like everyone else.
Thumbelina felt happier than ever before. She had finally found a place where she truly belonged.
The swallow watched proudly from above. He was glad that his tiny friend had found her happy ending.
From that day forward, Thumbelina lived happily in the flower kingdom. Her kindness, courage, and gentle heart made her beloved by everyone she met.
And whenever children hear the story of Thumbelina, they remember that even the smallest person can have the biggest adventures.
